I'm looking for an easy to understand explanation of what this mod is, why you might want it.

A "C90 mod" or "DJ drive" is a procedure done to increase your drive ratio, and in effect make each gear on the bike "taller."

It involves taking the final drive assembly from a C90, VS1400, or VL1500 and installing it into a C50. This requires a modified drive shaft to accommodate slight dimensional differences in the final drive casings. A C50 drive shaft can be trimmed down for this purpose, or a C90 drive shaft can be cut in half and re-welded with spacers to lengthen it.

The net effect of this mod is that at a given speed, the engine will be turning about 14% slower than a stock C50. This is nice because, for instance, 75 MPH on a modified bike feels like 65 MPH on a stock bike. This does a lot to make the C50 more enjoyable to ride at highway speeds.

The obvious downside of this modification is that torque is proportionally decreased with the gearing ratio. This only affects the first gear, however, as your shift points change with the mod as well. This, in effect, makes subsequent gears just as usable, just at higher speeds.

As noted this mod will reduce engine rpm at cruise and in every gear. Being the case it will also reduce power in each gear and a way many ahve regained that power is by performing a Stage 3 mod such as this one, which will add between 13%-16% based on exhaust pipes chosen: http://gmanindustries.com/product_info.php?cPath=38_43&products_id=113

I don't have the Bully, but I did add an FI processor, aftermarket pipes and air filter to my bike, and GMan is right, it does make a BIG difference. – mLewisLogic Jan 15 at 22:55

I really want to do this with my Suzuki c90.....meaning I need the final driven gear (or other similar part) from a M90, or any of the 109 series of Suzuki cruisers.

I have a 2005 C90, stage 3. It is pushing some serious horsepower and torque. Starting in 2nd gear is the norm. I need taller gearing throughout the 5 gears.

Has anyone used M109, C109 gears to make the gear ratio of the C90 higher?

That's a pretty slick maneuver for the C50, although in hindsight you probably should have simply purchased a C90 to begin with. As far as the C90 goes, a better final drive would have been good, although I can't say that I miss it all that much and I'm riding a Stage 3 bike.

I've put over 20K on my bike since I bought it in '06, and I'm running it with Mornton Equalizer Custom Straights (unbaffled) and a USBIII PowerCommander rigged for an aftermarket exhaust. I'm able to roll out of 1st gear just fine. I've taken it on weeklong runs to places like the Tail of the Dragon and the Badlands in South Dakota, and I'm averaging about 50mpg. Again, a taller final drive would have been nice, but it isn't really necessary.

I think the greatest contribution I've made to the bike was to install a GMan 2-gallon extended fuel cell. I'm no longer the first rider who needs to fuel up anymore. At 50mpg, I can go almost 300 miles when I'm completely topped off.

Thanks,

Cole

Hey, Cole

My C90 has a K&N, Roadhouse Dooleys (love the retro low, one pipe on each side look) which sound great. I had a power commander on it, but switched to GMan's Bully FI controller. This was a great move. The Bully allows you to change settings even while you are riding so you can really dial in your fuel mixture at different rpm's and loads. The bike has so much more power and torque than it did with everything stock. It's a pleasure to ride, and I've had many people complement me on my "Harley". Of course I have to explain that it's a Suzuki!

Do you have some engine/drivetrain vibration at 70-80mph cruising speeds? I do. I'd like to get rid of that, and get a higher propeller gear, or maybe a taller rear tire to drop the revs on the highway a bit. In 5th gear, I can cruise at 45 all the way up to 110mph. The engine can definitely handle taller gears for lower highway revs.
